CARP Task

This task was made in accordance on the principles of Contrast, Alignment, Repetition, and Proximity, that was referenced and researched from the book “The Non-Designers Designers Book”. Originally we had a design that was purposely made with a terrible sense of the four principles, and our mission was to rearrange and modify the layout so that it would become a proper flyer for a pumpkin patch, with a pleasant colour scheme and composition.

FIRST DESIGN

For my first iteration and attempt at the task, I wanted to incorporate a unique touch for the composition. I was able to achieve that by making a completely hand drawn image of a few pumpkins and sunflowers on the bottom of the flyer, so that it would give a feel to the viewer of it being about pumpkins, and even if the viewer wouldn’t look at the title he would notice instantly the silhouette of gourds. I decided to make it all centered so that it would resemble better a flyer, but later on I changed it all to the left as is seen on the next iteration of the flyer.

SECOND DESIGN

Here I wanted to make better use of the sunflowers I drew on the bottom right of the flyer. I liked what I had going but I still felt that it didn’t have much contrast on anything, specially on the orange colours, and that the text on the bottom was simply too much information for a viewer to digest completely. The brown circle with the bullet points on the right also felt wrong, and even after trying a bunch of different variants I ended up scrapping it.

FINAL DESIGN

This design was definitely the one that I was most proud of and where I applied everything I learned from the previous two. First I wanted to change the thing that was most predominant in the flyer, and those were fonts that I was using, I decided to use Adelle for the title, as it had a rustic feeling with the serifs and it portrayed the farm lifestyle perfectly. With Adelle I used Brandon Grotesque for the remaining text as it contrasted perfectly with it, giving a similar energy but in a much simpler way.

The second thing that was bothering me from the previous iterations was the lack of contrast in the whole composition, so I decided to saturate a little bit more of the oranges found in the text, and changed the color levels of the drawing of the pumpkins on Photoshop, so they too would have more contrast.

I also wanted to simplify the whole layout of the flyer so I removed a lot of clutter in form of text from the previous iterations, leaving only the essentials for the viewer. I also thought that the sunflowers were a little bit too much so I removed them all together and changed the text alignment back to the middle so that all of the information pops out more and fills out the space where the sunflowers were.

For a more rustic feeling I used a brush with texture for the background, so it would also resemble the sky and fill out the void of having a simple white background.
